Canton Spoils SCR-I Softball Senior Night with 8-2 Defeat

Kellyn Wickert fires the pitch home during Senior Night at Johnson Park on September 27th.

With all six seniors in the line-up for the final time at home, the Scotland County softball team hoped for one last hurrah, but it wasn’t to be as Canton knocked off SCR-I 8-2 on Senior Night at Johnson Park.

The visitors put a damper on the Scotland County festivities nearly immediately after the seniors and their families were recognized in the pre-game on field program.

Canton sent eight batters to the plate and pushed across four runs in the first inning off Kellyn Wickert, in just her second career start.

The senior, forced into the roll due to a hand injury to hurler Kelly Lister, settled down after the opening frame.

She retired the side in order in the next two innings allowing her team to claw back into the contest.

Kirsten Johnston led off the game for SCR-I with a triple but was stranded at third.

SCR-I pushed two runs across in the second inning. Jessica Bair started the rally with a base hit. A two-out single by Megan Westhoff was followed by a double off the bat of Skyler Alderton making the score 4-2.

Canton put a damper on the night with a big fifth inning. The visitors scored three runs, all with two outs, to put the game out of reach.

SCR-I was unable to take advantage of scoring opportunities in fifth and sixth innings as Canton held on for the 8-2 victory.

Westhoff went 3-3 at the plate to pace the offense. Andrea Shelley was 2-3 and Alderton had the big two-run double.

Wickert struck out nine. She allowed 11 hits and walked one.

The loss drops SCR-I to 7-14 on the season.
