Vandals Destroy Mailboxes Across Two Counties
Neither rain, sleet or snow is supposed to stop the United States Postal Service, but a vandal or vandals did their best in the early morning hours of February 9th to prevent local mail delivery.
According to the Scotland County Sheriff’s Department a total of 27 mailboxes were reported destroyed over the weekend along Highway 136 west of Memphis and Route B, Route D and Route JJ. The trail of debris didn’t stop at the Schuyler County line. Sheriff Winn said he is still waiting on totals from Schuyler County but preliminary estimates are equal to or higher than the damage done in Scotland County.
In addition to the mailboxes, the vandals also destroyed a road sign, a stop sign and a Sullivan Auctioneer sign. The damage was caused by blunt force in most cases, but there was at least one instance of gunshots fired at a scene.
One property owner has offered a $100 cash reward for information to the arrest and conviction of the responsible parties.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the Scotland County Sheriff’s Department at 660-465-2106.
