Cause of Grass Fire Being Investigated

What appeared as just another spring natural cover fire is now being investigated by local law enforcement.

A blaze near the Iowa state line on March 26th destroyed a barn and three other outbuildings while consuming roughly 150 acres of CRP on the Evelyn Bechtel property.

The Scotland County Fire Department was on the scene for nearly two hours bringing the spreading wildfire under control.

The property owner, a Burlington, IA, resident, informed the Scotland County Sheriff’s Department that she had no knowledge of any controlled burns planned for her ground.

Further investigation determined that there were actually two fires, leading the sheriff’s department to contact the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Evidence was collected at the scene and the case remains under investigation, with the source of the fire still being reviewed.

Anyone with information regarding the situation on March 26th is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 660-465-2106.
