School Seeking Bids For Parking Lot Upgrade

With a preliminary plan in place to resurface the south parking lot and drive at the elementary and high schools, the Scotland County R-I Board of Education agreed to seek bids for the project during the May 8th board meeting.

Bids for construction of a blacktop surface will be opened on June 3rd.

“We haven’t committed to undertaking the project,” said Superintendent Dave Shalley. “We have simply committed to see what it is going to cost to do the project.”

The district is considering construction of a four-inch blacktop parking surface as well as a six-inch blacktop bus lane. Great River Engineering, Inc. estimated the project would require approximately 2,200 tons of BP1 asphalt.

The project also calls for the installation of approximately 1,900 feet of cement curb and guttering as well as miscellaneous sidewalk repairs adjacent to the parking surface.

“The engineers recommended we address the drainage issues we experience in the parking area with a curb and gutter system,” Shalley said. “Keeping this system above ground is a benefit as far as future maintenance.”
