Fair to Feature BBQ Cook-Off on Saturday

The drifting smell of barbecue can quickly draw a crowd. The Scotland County Fair is banking on that, hoping also to draw some of the best “barbecuers”.

The Scotland County Community Betterment Group will host the first annual BBQ Cook-off at the 2008 Scotland County Fair on Saturday, June 21st.

Team’s of up to 3 cooks will compete for the title of Best BBQ Cook.

The entry fee is $35 per team with proceeds going to the courthouse clock restoration fund. The betterment group will provide each contestant five pounds of hamburger for judging and tasting.

The site at the fairgrounds will open at noon for registration followed by a cooks’ meeting at 12:30 p.m.

Samples for judging must be ready at 3:00 p.m. with public tasting to follow at 3:15 p.m. The winners will be decided by a public vote, which closes at 4:15 p.m. with the winner being announced at a closing ceremony at 4:30 p.m.

All contestants will be required to cook on site using their own ingredients, cooking source (either propane or charcoal grills) and other supplies.
