Seamster Secures $500 NMCAA Grant For Extension

On Thursday, August 28, 2008 the University Extension in Scotland County received a $500 grant from Northeast Missouri Community Action Agency. The grant was awarded during a special ceremony held in conjunction with the retirement party for outgoing NMCAA Memphis director Beverly Talbert.

This grant was made available through a CSBG Community Services Block Grant which supports NMCAA community outreach efforts in Adair, Clark, Knox, Schuyler and Scotland counties and was the funding source for two Step Up to Leadership programs conducted this year.

Step Up to Leadership graduates complete a demanding 12 session series of workshops designed to encourage leadership and engagement in improving the local community. Graduates acquire grantsmanship skills and have the opportunity to write a grant of $500 or less on behalf of a local organization to meet a specific local need.

Deborah Seamster was a member of this class and was given the opportunity to write a proposal for an organization of her choice. Her proposal was chosen for funding.

Talbert praised the work done by Seamster to prepare the successful application, noting the process was lengthy. She added that Seamsterís success will bode well for future grant applications courtesy of the leadership training.

Talbert joined Seamster in issuing a public challenge for supporters of the local extension service to consider making matching donations to help insure the future of the program in Scotland County.
