School Board Removes Interim Tag From High School Principal Job

An emergency situation just days before the start of the current school year saw the Scotland County R-I Board of Education turn to retired administrator Gary Gordy of Kahoka. Gordy was hired as the interim high school principal while the board entered a search for a permanent replacement for principal Ken Cross who passed away August 15th.

At the November board of education meeting, the interim tag was officially removed from Gordy, after a contract for the remainder of the 2008-09 school year was approved by a 6-0 vote.

Also during the executive session portion of the November 10th meeting, the board voted 6-0 to offer employment to Rebecca Harper for custodial work.

In other business, the board took advantage of the recent zero-interest loan from the USDA and Tri-County Electric Cooperative to secure significant interest savings on lease payments for last years campus upgrades.

The board voted to prepay $720,000 of the $1.8 million projectís 2007B lease certificates. Earlier this year the local electric cooperative awarded the $740,000 zero-interest loan to SCR-I, allowing the board to make this move, which will save the district an estimated $208,000 in interest payments over the life of the lease agreement.

FFA Website

Ms. Whitlock presented a proposal to implement an FFA website. The site would have a direct link to the school site and would provide up-to-date and quality information. The board voted 6-0 to approve the proposal.

The board voted 6-0 to accept procedural evaluations on Elementary Instructional Climate and Elementary Instructional Effectiveness as presented by Rhonda McBee. The board voted 6-0 to accept the procedural evaluation of District Extra Curricular Activities presented by the Athletic Director Kevin Gundy and to take his recommendations under advisement. The board also voted 6-0 to accept the procedural evaluation of District Food Service as prepared by Terry Arnold and presented by Mr. Shalley and to take her recommendations under advisement.
