MARTHA D. GROSECLOSE WIRTZ
(6/30/1942 - 12/23/2007)



Martha D. Groseclose Wirtz, 79, of Keokuk, IA, formerly of Baring, MO, died Saturday, February 16, 2008 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

She was born on June 11, 1928 in Huntsville Township, Schuyler County, IL, the daughter of Louis S. and Gladys M. Rust Lambert. She married Joe Groseclose on July 31, 1949 and to this union were born five children. He preceded her in death. On April 12, 2003, Martha was united in marriage to Arthur Wirtz in Keokuk, IA. He survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Doris Oliver and her husband Junior of Baring, MO and Pixie Garrett and her husband Raymond of Orion, IL, two sons, George Groseclose and his wife Angie of LaClede, MO and Joe Groseclose, Jr and his wife Karen of Lancaster, MO, twenty-six grandchildren, Rick, Debbie, Tammy, Eddie, D.J., Jessie, Shawn, Jordon, Jerry, David, Robbie, Mike, Brenda, Tony, Amanda, David, Michelle, George, Matt, Seth, Sammy, Marie, Aaron, Lisa, Thomas and Chris, thirty-four great-grandchildren, seventeen great-great-grandchildren, two sisters, Fern Emery and her husband Clifford of Lorraine, IL and Jerrylee Beeler of Macon, MO, three brothers, Floyd Lambert and his wife Melba of Augusta, IL, Lyman Lambert of Plymouth, IL and Keith Lambert and his wife Sharon of Lorraine, IL, two sisters-in-law, Verna Smith of Keokuk and Mabel Boone and her husband John of Keokuk, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Thomas Groseclose, two brothers, Philip Lambert and Clarence Lambert, and one sister, Carollann Lambert.

She was a member of the Fabius Baptist Church in Downing, MO. She attended the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk and was a member of the Service Circle of St. Paul’s.

She owned and operated the Southside Café in Lancaster, MO for several years and also worked at other restaurants in the Lancaster area. She moved to Baring, MO in 1996 and cooked at the Oliver Café until her retirement in 2003.

She enjoyed working on the farm, taking care of her children and going to church. Martha’s family and friends were her life’s joy. She was a wonderful baker and enjoyed baking pies for her family and friends. She had been devoted to her husband Art and enjoyed their years together.

Funeral services were held February 20, 2008 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Reverend John Tyler officiating. Burial will be in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in rural Keokuk, IA.

Memorials may be made to the St. Paul United Church of Christ or the Hickory Grove Cemetery.
