FLORENCE G. STEVENSON

Florence G. Stevenson, age 93, of Memphis, formerly of Arbela, MO, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2008 at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis. Florence was born July 29, 1914 to Henry and Ivan Busby Jansen on a farm 9 miles north of Arbela. She married Paul “Shorty” Stevenson June 13, 1931. They lived all their lives together in Scotland County.
Florence was a long time member of Mt. Moriah Church and the Ladies Aid, always lending a helping hand with Bible School or where ever she was needed. She was an active member of the Scotland County Hospital and Care Center Auxiliary. Florence belonged to several groups such as Study Group, Scotland County Extension, including working at the art hall during the fair week. Florence and Shorty were Farm Bureau members. Florence worked as Housekeeping Supervisor from 1970 when Scotland County Memorial Hospital opened its doors until her retirement in 1976. After her retirement, she continued her greatest passion, embroidery work and quilting. She enjoyed showing her hand made quilts she made for family and friends.
Survivors include a daughter, Pauline Childress of Ewing, MO; one son, Richard (Twila) Stevenson of Arbela, MO; a son-in-law, Jim Burcham of Walnut Grove, MO; and 10 grandchildren, Joyce (John) Logan of Ewing, MO, Dr. H. Gene (Peggy) Childress of Lewistown, MO, Kitty (Kevin) Shults of Ewing, MO, Veda Shults of Lewistown, MO, Pam (Rusty) Kaylor of LaGrange, MO, Judy (Randy) Kennedy of Mt. Sterling, IA, Charles (Geri) Stevenson of Overland, MO, Kay (Ronnie) Long of Walnut Grove, MO, Gary (Sabine) Burcham of Walnut Grove, MO, and Randy (Tammy) Burchum of Walnut Grove, MO; 21 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 63 years; a brother Felix (Delaphine) Jansen; one daughter, Betty Stevenson Burcham; a son-in-law, Herbert Childress; one granddaughter, Beverly Howell; two grandsons, Donald Stevenson and Paul Shaw; and a great-great-grandson Kendall Smith Shults.
Memorials are suggested to the Mt. Moriah Cemetery and can be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday June 3, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, with Rev. Robert Moseley, officiating. Musicians were Arleta Dye, pianist, and Sheila Moseley, soloist. Pallbearers were: Ronald Meyer, James Kice, Darrell Harvey, Roland Meyer, David Smith, and Chris Montgomery. Honorary pallbearers were: Paul Franklin, Joe McVeigh, Noah Clatt, Okie Boyer, and Gene Durham. Interment was in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery, rural Scotland County, MO. Arrangements were under the direction of Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
