HILLIS RALPH MCCLAMROCH
(11/2/1927 – 6/3/2008)



Hillis Ralph McClamroch, of Memphis, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. The son of Ralph and Sylvia (See) McClamroch, he was born November 2, 1927, in Gorin, Missouri. Hillis was 80 years of age at the time of his passing.

In 1945, Hillis graduated from Rutledge High School. Following high school, Hillis served his country in the United States Army in occupied Japan during WWII. On June 12, 1949, Hillis was united in marriage to A. Elizabeth Mathes at the Rutledge Methodist Church. Hillis and Elizabeth enjoyed 58 wonderful years of marriage until Elizabeth’s passing earlier this year. Hillis, with Elizabeth’s help, operated a successful farming business for many years until he retired in 1997. Hillis was a member of the Rutledge Methodist Church, the Rutlege Saddle Club, and the Memphis United Methodist Church. He also served as school board president for the Rutlege School District until 1975. Hillis had many interests and hobbies in life, including horseback riding, traveling the western United States, watching John Wayne movies, and most of all, spending time with his family.

Hillis is survived by his children Lynn and his wife Mary Ann of Kirksville, Missouri; Barbara and husband Gary Childress of Greentop, Missouri; and Mitchell and wife Nancy of Memphis, Missouri; his three grandchildren, Lance and Lucas McClamroch of Kirksville, Missouri, and Paige McClamroch of Memphis, Missouri; his sister-in-law Betty Mathes, of Kershaw, South Carolina; brother-in-law Wayne Mathes of Bolivar, Missouri; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Hillis was preceded in death by his parents, wife Elizabeth, brother Denver, sister-in-law Jody McClamroch, brother-in-law Kenneth Mathes, son Michael, and grandson Zachary McClamroch.

The family has suggested memorials to the Scotland County Cancer Fund or the Scotland County Extension 4H Council. Memorials may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63501.

Funeral Services were held on June 7, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the Memphis United Methodist Church, Memphis, MO, with Rev. Terry Lippstreu, officiating. Musicians were Joan Hinds, organist, Tom and Teresa Cotton, vocalists. Pallbearers were Lance McClamroch, Lucas McClamroch, Mark McClamroch, Wyatt McClamroch, Bill Ketchum, Jason Ketchum, Jesse Ketchum and Steve Mathes. Honorary Pallbearers were Frank Reed, Don Pence, Basil Humphrey, Bud Garrett, Forrest Martin, Ora Armstrong, Leroy Huff, J.P. Childers, and Bill Purvis. Interment was in the Memphis Cemtery, Memphis, MO.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis.
