PAYTON DUBOISE SMYSER

Payton Smyser, 88, of Glenwood, MO passed away at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, MO, on August 14, 2008.

The son of Everett Phillip and Ada Belle (Chambers) Smyser, he was born on June 9, 1920 in Centerville, IA.

On February 23, 1942, at the Christian Church parsonage in Lancaster, MO, he was united marriage to Nan Juanita Allen and to this union three children were born, Bernice, Payton Murl (Sonny) and Phillip.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Smyser of Glenwood, MO; his children, Bernice Kenney and husband, Larry of Glenwood, MO, Payton Murl “Sonny” Smyser and wife, Beverly of Lancaster, MO, and Phillip Smyser and wife, Sandi of Moberly, MO; eight grandchildren, Julie (Kenney) Johnson of Moberly, MO, Guy Kenney of Salisbury, MO, Chris Smyser of Lancaster, MO, Amy (Smyser) Hamilton of Lancaster, MO, Shelly (Smyser) Easton of Moberly, MO, Lori Smyser of Columbia, MO, Phillip Smyser II of Moberly, MO and Katie (Smyser) Hinkle, Salisbury, MO; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Manley Smyser and wife, Mary of Glenwood, MO and Quinten Smyser and wife, Marie of Lancaster, MO; five sisters, Anna Lou Byrd of Hannibal, MO, Edith Glen and husband, Earl of Ottumwa, IA, Esther Cypert and husband, Big Al of Melrose, IA, Virginia Melvin of Glenwood, MO and Nancy Kerby and husband, Keith of Glenwood, MO; many nieces and nephews; one special brother-in-law, Ralph Allen of Peyton, CO; other family members and many good friends.

Payton was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Belle Durham.

Payton was drafted into the United States Armed services on December 26, 1942 and received an honorable discharge on November 9, 1948 after serving during World War II in Rhineland, North France, Normandy and Central Europe.

Payton was an active member of the Lancaster Christian Church of many years where he taught Sunday School for approximately 25-30 years and was also an elder for 20 years. He taught Auto Mechanics at the Kirksville Vo-Tech School in Kirksville, MO. Payton was an avid hunter and fisherman. Payton’s joy in life was being a husband, father, and grandfather and spending time with family and friends. He will be missed.

Funeral services were held on August 18, 2008 at the Christian Church in Lancaster, MO with Pastor Steve Altheide, officiating. Music was provided by Maureen Watkins, organist and Cole Tippett, soloist. Pallbearers were Guy Kenney, Chris Smyser, Phillip Smyser II, Trevor Kenney, Cody Johnson, Cory (The Dude) Hinkle, Brandon Hamilton, and Darrin Hinkle. Honorary pallbearers were Rick Minter, Travis Harris, Dean Avery, and Russell Morton. Memorials have been established for the Glenwood Cemetery or the Lancaster Christian Church. Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery in Glenwood, MO with military rites conducted by the Scotland County VFW Post #4958. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster, MO.
