Leonard Eugene Mathes, 81, of Moriarty, NM, formerly of Memphis, passed away on Saturday, October 25, 2008 with his loving family beside him.

Leonard was born in Downing, MO, on April 9, 1927, the son of Harry Clements and Irma May (Peck) Mathes. He married Lois Ilene Kutzner on June 3, 1949, and to this union three children were born.

Leonard was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. He was a Korean War veteran, receiving a WWII Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal in Japan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, and three sons Terry Lee, David and Larry Mathes.

Leonard is survived by his son Jeremy K. Mathes, daughter, Denise R. (Mathes) Beasley and her husband Terry, daughter-in-law, Kathleen Mathes, brothers, George, Mounty, and Harry Jr. Mathes, and sister, Rosella Hamilton, and 10 grandchildren.

The family has suggested memorials to his V.F.W. Post # 401 and they maybe left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.

Mass for Christian Burial was held November 1, 2008, at the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis, with Father Bill Kottenstette officiating. Interment followed in the Memphis Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Farley, Chris, and Kelly Kutzner, Doug and Joshua Mathes and Gabriel Beasley.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Payne Funeral Chapel of Memphis.
