Virgil J. Mason, 93, of Rutledge, Missouri, formerly of Greeley, Colorado, passed away October 27, 2008 at Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Missouri.

Virgil was born in Rutledge, Missouri to Ai and Lillian (Johnston) Mason. He grew up in Rutledge and moved to Ault, Colorado at the age of seventeen. He graduated from Ault High School in 1933.

On June 14, 1936 he married Edna Seela in Greeley. Mr. Mason worked for Rucker’s Service Station in Greeley and later as a fireman for Union Pacific Railroad. He owned and operated several Phillips Service Stations in Greeley, but is best known for his more than thirty years as owner of the Phillips station on the corner of 16th Street and 10th Avenue. After he sold the station he moved to Stockton, CA where he worked as a harbor master for the Stockton Yacht Club. He retired in 1984 and moved back to Rutledge, MO.

Mr. Mason was a member of the Occidental Lodge #20 AF & AM, Denver Consistory, York Rite and El Jebel Shrine. Though a man of few words, he was a very caring person who would often go out of his way to help his family and friends. He always had something to do and filled idle time with fixing things and tinkering in the garage. He will be remembered as an honest and hardworking man.

Virgil is survived by his wife of 72 years; daughter, Sandy Harden of Denver, CO; sons, Jim Mason and wife Loretta of Salem, OR, Dale Mason of Denver, grandchildren, Theresa Salmen of Charlotte, NC, David Harden of Denver, Cindy Burch of Rowlett, TX, Steve Harden of Centennial, CO, Sheri Mason and Michelle Rizzi, both of Stockton, CA; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and special friends, Garret Heck and Laveta Comstock.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 21, 2008 at Adamson Chapel, Greeley, CO. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Greeley, CO.
