BERNICE (SMOOT) REED
(10/14/1904 - 12/5/2008)



Bernice (Smoot) Reed was born on October 14, 1904 in Downing, MO to Joseph Edward and Bertha Ellen (Frank) Smoot. She passed away December 5, 2008, at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital, following a short illness.

On March 26, 1926 she married Oscar Reed who preceded her in death on September 1, 1977.

She was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Bertha Smoot, two brothers, Sanford and Lala, two sisters: Vadna and Myrtle, one grandson and one great-grandson.

Bernice was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She worked at various jobs and alongside her husband in various businesses.

She is survived by one son Frank Reed and wife June of Memphis, MO, one daughter Joan Norman and husband Bob of Bloomfield, IA. Five grandchildren, Ronnie (Linda) Norman of Dundas, VA, Sandra Rodgers of Pleasant Hill, IA, Dan (Cheryl) Reed of Wentzville, MO, Dave (Vonnie) Reed of Pensacola, FL, and Randy (Deanna) Norman of Pulaski, IA. Twelve great-grandchildren, eleven great-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren.

Bernice was a member of the Downing Methodist Church and also attended the Memphis United Methodist Church after she moved to Memphis, as long as her health permitted. She also attended circle meetings and was a faithful participant of the Quilting Group. She was a 60 year member of the Kahoka Chapter #40 Order of the Eastern Star, Wayland, MO.

The family has suggested memorials to Scotland County Care Center, and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO 63555.

Visitation and funeral Services were held on Monday, December 8, 2008, at Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis. Eastern Star Services by Kahoka Chapter #40 Order of the Eastern Star, Wayland, MO were combined with the funeral services, with Rev. Charles Hammack officiating. Pallbearers were Sandi Rodgers, Dan Reed, Dave Reed, Randy Norman, Jim Reed and Brian Reed. Honorary Pallbearers were Ron Norman and Jay Moore. Interment will be in the Downing Cemetery, Downing, MO.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
