Cardinals Cruise to 86-59 Win in Memphis

At last glance, the South Shelby boys basketball team was not among the state’s top 10 teams according to the experts. If Scotland County fans got a vote, the Cardinals definitely would find a place in the rankings especially after South Shelby’s 86-59 victory in Memphis on January 8th.

Cody Musgrove scored the first basket of the game and a pair of free throws by Kyle Shelley put SCR-I on top 4-3. But that was the final lead of the game for the Tigers as South Shelby outscored the Tigers 25-3 to close out the first period on top 28-7.

Matt Patterson scored 10 points during the key stretch as the Cardinals knocked down his fourth three pointer to help build the cushion.

The offense continued strong in the second period for South Shelby. Kelcey Moore hit two more three pointers as South Shelby added 24 more points.

SCR-I kept pace in the second period. Jacob Howard came off the bench to score 10 points and Andrew Duley added five but the Tigers still trailed 52-28 at the intermission.

Cody Musgrove got on track in the third period for Scotland County. He scored six points during the quarter but South Shelby still extended the lead to 74-40.

Musgrove hit Scotland County’s only three pointer of the night midway through the fourth period. South Shelby on the other hand connected on 11 shots from behind the arc helping to secure the 86-59 victory.

Moore led all scorers with 24 points while Patterson finished with 22 points to lead the Cardinals (7-3).

Howard finished with a career best 20 points to pace SCR-I, which dropped to 5-6 on the season with the loss. Musgrove scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half. Shelley pitched in with 11 points for the Tigers.
