Musgrove Tops 1,000 Point Mark as Tigers Topple North Shelby

It was a night of many highlights Tuesday in Memphis. Scotland County got its first conference win of the year. The Tigers avenged an 11-point loss just three days earlier to North Shelby. And unbeknownst to most in the crowd, senior Cody Musgrove surpassed the 1,000 point career mark late in the fourth period as SCR-I knocked off North Shelby 63-55.

“We just simply played our rear ends off,” said Coach Ryan Bergeson of his team’s effort. “They pretty much dominated us at their place, but we learned in the fourth period of the game that the way to beat them was to get right up in their face.”

The late rally proved to be the precursor for a dominating performance by the Tigers who came out and played 32 minutes of inspired ball.

The Tigers had to do so without the services of sophomore starting forward Kyle Shelley who was out with a knee injury. The bench stepped up to fill the void as Bergeson mixed Joe Spurgeon, Jacob Howard and freshman Bryce Smith into the rotation.

Spurgeon got the start and set the tone with his defense on North Shelby’s Michael Stoneburner.

“Joe scored the first basket of the game and then he just went after Stoneburner on the defensive end and helped us wear him down,” Bergeson said.

After scoring just 32 points against the Raiders the previous Friday night, SCR-I poured in 35 points in the first half alone in the rematch.

Cody Musgrove scored 10 of the Tigers 17 first period points. Spurgeon, Smith and Howard each had a field goal as the Tigers led 17-14.

Seven different Tigers made shots in the second period as the Tigers held on to a 35-32 lead at the intermission.

North Shelby rallied in the third period despite six points from Howard. The Raiders pulled ahead 48-47 with just eight minutes to play.

Scotland County clamped down on defense down the stretch allowing just one field goal in the final eight minutes.

Travis Trueblood knocked down a big three pointer and Tigers made seven of eight free throws to ice the 63-55 victory.

Musgrove led all scorers with 26 points on the night for Scotland County (7-9, 1-1 TRC). Howard added 10 points and Trueblood finished with eight. Stoneburner led North Shelby (6-7, 1-3) with 15 points.

Musgrove, who is averaging 16.7 points and 10.6 rebounds a night, has already surpassed the 250 point mark this year en route to eclipsing the 1,000 point career mark in his third year as a starter.
