Tigers Season Ends in Opening Round Upset at District Tourney

Hopes of going out with a bang ended with more of a thud as Scotland County’s 2007-08 basketball season ended in the first round of the Class 2 District 6 tournament when an underrated Westran squad easily handled the Tigers 61-36.

SCR-I, which went into the game as the #4 seed in the eight-team bracket, never challenged after the first period, falling behind 13-7 in the opening eight minutes.

Cody Musgrove scored all seven SCR-I points including a three pointer. But a gimmick chaser defense used by Westran really limited the Tigers on offense.

“They played a base one-three zone with the other defender just flying around the court, pressuring the ball,” said Coach Ryan Bergeson. “We didn’t handle the pressure well, and took way too many jump shots early on.”

Westran put the game away in the second period, outscoring SCR-I 15-6 to lead 28-13. A pair of free throws by Kyle Shelley were the only points of the first half not scored by Musgrove. Roscoe Robinson had 12 points in the key stretch to help the Hornets blow the game open.

The Hornets came out running in the third period. The fastbreak style netted Westran 18 points and pushed the margin to 20 points at 46-26 with just eight minutes left in the Scotland County season.

Musgrove hit his second three pointer of the night in the fourth period and fellow seniors Travis Trueblood, Eric Glass and Matt Dice got into the score book as Bergeson turned the contest over to the team’s five upperclassmen in their final game.

Musgrove finished with 20 points to lead Scotland County, which finished the year with an 8-17 record. Westran (14-11) was led by Robinson who finished with 28 points and 15 rebounds.

The Hornets, the #5 seed in the tournament went on to upset state ranked Paris in the semi-finals before losing to Knox County in the championship game. The 56-49 victory marked the Eagles (21-9) first district title since 1971.

Knox County will take on #3 ranked Harrisburg (24-3) in section play in Hannibal on March 5th.
