Musgrove, Johnston Honored as NEMO All-District Selections
Two Scotland County players were honored by the Northeast Missouri Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association when it announced the 2008 Northeast All-District Basketball Teams on March 18th.
Cody Musgrove headlined the Class 2 Boys 1st Team. The SCR-I senior was joined by brothers Jon and Joe Gilliam from state ranked Paris, Drew Ayers, a senior from Canton, Jesse Hinke, a senior from Putnam County, and teammates Daniel McMahon (senior), and Dennis Dent (junior) from Knox County.
The second team consisted of Canton senior Justin Ellison; Paris junior William Ransdell; Knox County senior Cory Schultz; Putnam County senior Torey Weston; Marceline senior Luke Ewigman; Van Far senior Ryan Hesse, and Putnam County sophomore Daniel Mallette.
The Boys Class 2 Coach of the Year was Jesse Crawford of Knox County. The Eagles won their first district title in over 25 years before losing in overtime to eventual state champions Harrisburg.
On the girls side, Scotland County’s Kirsten Johnston was selected for second-team all-district honors.
The first team consisted of Canton teammates Danielle Caldwell (senior) and Tori Niemann (sophomore); the Putnam County duo of Brittany Casady (senior) and Katie Steele (junior); Clopton junior Deaven Omohundro; Community R-6 senior Andrea Kleinsorge; Marceline junior Jordan Ewigman, and Van-Far sophomore Jordan Spardling.
Joining Johnston on the second team were Canton teammates Lindsey Lillard (junior) and Jessie Logsdon (sophomore); the Clopton senior tandem of Samantha Yates and Tricia Haake; Marceline junior Taylor Frandson; Community R-6 senior Melanie Willingham; and Putnam County junior Hilary Mason.
Coach of the year honors went to Bobby Spoonster from Clopton who took his team to a third place finish in the Class 2 state tournament. Putnam County lost to eventual state champion Penney in the first round of the playoffs, while Canton, ranked #3 in the state at that time, didn’t even make the state playoffs after losing to #1 ranked Westran (the runner-up at the state championships) in the district title game.
Several other SCR-I opponents throughout the season also earned post season honors.
The Class 1 Girls 1st team included Cloe Phillips of Green City and Hailee Kelsey of Brashear. The second team featured Justine Bane of LaPlata and Christina Scudder of Brashear.
The Class 1 boys squad featured familiar faces in first teamers Dusty Baker and Jordan Smith of LaPlata, JaVaun West of Atlanta and Kale Watson and Trae Treasure of Brashear. LaPlata’s David Fouch was again Coach of the Year.
The Class 3 all-district girls teams were dominated by #1 ranked South Shelby. The Lady Birds lost by one point in the state championship game. Earning first team honors were Erin Mayes and Jenna Mueller. Other first teamers were Kassidy Shuman of Clark County, Dalyn Collins of Brookfield, Tahnee Poe of Schuyler County and Abigail Gaus of Highland. South Shelby’s Milly Raush was Coach of the Year.
On the boys’ side, first teamers included Matt Peterson and Kyler Moore of South Shelby, John Mims of Highland, Jacob Winkler of Schuyler County and Colt Sommers of Clark County.
