Ben Wiley, Christina Duzan Earn All-District Quiz Bowl Honors

Senior captain Ben Wiley and junior Christina Duzan helped lead Scotland County’s Quiz Bowl squad into the semi-finals of the Class 2A District tournament held April 12 at Schuyler County High School in Queen City.

Both Wiley and Duzan were named to the All-District team by averaging 9.5 and 6.75 toss-ups per game. Short-handed because of illness and college exams, Wiley and Duzan were joined by senior Nathan Purvis and sophomore Spencer Keller in what Tiger coach Sam Berkowitz said was one of the strongest showings by Scotland County this season.

“We played two teams that beat us earlier in the year and we handled those teams easily during the morning rounds,” said Berkowitz. “I think that showed how much we improved from the start of the year. All who played Saturday stepped up to the challenge. We just fell a little short of our goal; repeating as district champion.”

Scotland County opened district play by downing Canton, 285-140, a team that had beaten the Tigers twice previously. Wiley, Duzan, and Keller led the way with six correct toss-ups each during the contest.

Next, Scotland County shelled Milan, 345-80 as Wiley answered 10 toss-ups followed by Keller with 7. The final morning contest saw the Tigers upending Paris, 310-150, as Wiley answered 11 toss-ups and Duzan added 9 to pace the victory. Earlier in the year, Paris downed Scotland County in overtime at the Monroe City Tourney.

Those three victories earned Scotland County a berth in the championship round with three other undefeated teams from the morning rounds. Scotland County was paired with South Shelby while Schuyler County and Knox County would tangle to see who would face-off for the district title.

In the semi-final contest, Scotland County got off to a fast start, leading South Shelby 100-30, after the first quarter. But the half-time lead shrunk to 20 points 150-130. The Tigers still clung to the lead after three quarters 210-200, and finally succumbed 280-250. Wiley and Duzan answered 11 and 10 toss-ups each during the contest. Schuyler County defeated South Shelby in the finals to take the district title.

Those schools participating in the District 4 tournament Saturday were: Canton, Knox County, Marceline, Milan, Paris, Putnam County, Salisbury, Schuyler County, Scotland County, South Shelby, and Westran.
