Spurgeon Qualifies For State Golf Championship
Scotland County R-I golfer Joe Spurgeon will go out in style next week. The senior qualified to participate in the state championship May 12-13 at Silo Ridge Golf & Country Club in Bolivar.
The Tigers closed out the golf regular season April 30th in the Class 1 District 2 Tournament held April 30th at Timberlake Golf Course in Moberly.
Spurgeon shot an 89 on the day to tie for eighth overall and qualify for the Missouri Class 1 state tournament. The top 10 individual performers from each district event qualify for the state championship.
Marceline won the district team title with a composite score of 339 to edge Canton by eight strokes. Salisbury (350) finished third followed by LaPlata (367), Milan (382) and Putnam County (396).
Scotland County finished in seventh place with a team score of 398. Cairo finished eighth followed by Meadville.
Kasey Dial shot a 98 for the second best total on the Tigers team tally. Rounding out the performance were Jordan Fulk (101), Jerad Fuller (110) and Michael Moore (128).
Shane Kressing of Salisbury and Adam Potts of Canton tied for top individual honors, finishing with rounds of three-over-par (73). Milanís Ritnee Smiley was third with a 77 followed by Marcelineís Chris McGlothlin (79) and Mitchell Smith (81). Rounding out the state qualifiers were Tyler Hamilton, Marceline, 84; Paul Ricketts, Canton, 86; Paul Lazar, Salisbury, 88; and Travis Tumlin, LaPlata, 89.
