Bluebirds Fly Away With 42-7 Win Over SCR-I to Spoil Homecoming
After a solid start the Scotland County Tigers saw their dreams of a Homecoming victory sail away as the Bluebirds of Cole Camp flew home with a 42-7 victory on Saturday afternoon in Memphis.
The Tigers defense held Cole Camp on the opening possession of the first period and the Bluebirds kicker Aaron Craig missed a 42-yard field goal attempt, giving the Tigers the ball at the 27-yard line with 7:57 to play in the first period.
Kyle Shelley connected with Caleb Kittle on a 13-yard pass on SCR-Is first offensive play. Kittle moved the chains again when he converted a fourth down run.
But the drive ended with an interception at the 27 yard line by Cole Campís Steele Turner.
The first quarter came to a close on a sour note for Scotland County as Tyler Harris hit Garret Gilbert with a 64-yard touchdown pass. The PAT kick was good making it 7-0 with 59.1 seconds to play in the opening period.
After an SCR-I punt, Cole Camp ate up much of the second period with a long drive that culminated with a two-yard run by Harris with 5:33 to play in the first half. The PAT kick made it 14-0.
Kittle gave the Tigers good field position with a 24-yard kick return to the 40-yard line. But SCR-I couldnít move the chains and Cole Camp took over with 3:55 to play after an SCR-I punt.
Skylar Belzer broke the first play around the left end and scampered 64 yards for a touchdown with 3:34 left on the clock. Gilbert hit the PAT kick to make it 21-0.
Scotland County gave the ball right back with a fumble on the first play of the following possession.
With just 22 seconds left in the half Harris made it 28-0 when he scored on a two-yard run to send Cole Camp to the locker room with a huge lead.
Scotland County made a pair of defensive stands to open the third period. Harley Stone made a big tackle and Brandon Garnett broke up a pass play with a hard hit that pumped up the SCR-I crowd.
But the Tigers fumbled the Cole Camp punt and gave the ball back to the Bluebirds. The SCR-I defense held again, stopping Cole Camp on four straight plays inside the 20.
SCR-I couldnít move the chains on offense and Beltzer returned the SCR-I punt all the way to the 10-yard line. Harris scored on a five-yard run with 3:22 left in the third period. The Tigers defense stopped the two-point attempt, keeping the score at 34-0.
Cole Camp took advantage of another SCR-I fumble and cashed in short field position when Tyler Pickern scored on a 15-yard run with 11:33 left in the contest. Beltzer made the two-point run to put the score at 42-0 and insure the clock would not stop the rest of the game.
Rodney Sears gave the SCR-I crowd something to cheer about as he broke an 88-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Harley Stone made the PAT kick to make the score 42-7 with 4:20 to play.
Scotland County was held to four first downs on the afternoon. Sears ran for 100 yards on three attempts, including the 88-yard TD. Kittle carried the ball 13 times for 29 yards and Brassfield had four attempts for nine yards.
Shelley completed three of eight passes for 24 yards. Kittle had two receptions for 15 yards and Garnett had the other catch.
Cole Camp had 19 first downs on the afternoon. Gilbert ran the ball 10 times for 49 yards. Harris had 15 carries for 42 yards and Beltzer had nine runs for 86 yards. Pickern ran it six times for 42 yards.
Harris completed seven of 11 passes for 106 yards. Sean Farris had four grabs for 31 yards. Gilbert caught two passes for 75 yards and Colin Kaber had the other reception.
Shelley led the Scotland County defense with 14 stops on the day. Stone made 10 stops and Sabe Sears and Kittle each had nine tackles.
The Tigers fell to 1-3 on the year and will travel to Putnam County for the first of six straight Tri-Rivers Conference contests to close out the schedule.
