Limited Filings Reported For Public Offices

Midway through the official filing period for the April elections and a number of local offices are still without potential candidates.

The Scotland County R-III School Board is the lone entity with a full ballot, as three candidates have filed for the two three-year terms to be decided on election day. Incumbents Gary Miller and Stacy Westhoff have both filed for re-election. Chris Yarbrough has also filed for one of the seats.

Just one candidate has filed for the three available seats on the Gorin R-III Board of Education. Current member Diane Tague, who was appointed to fill an unexpired term, will seek election to a full three-year term on the board. There are two such seats available, as well as one one-year unexpired term.

In the City of Memphis, two candidates have filed for the office of east ward alderman. Current alderman Lucas Remley, who was appointed to the post last year, has filed for the job. Scott Goff will also seek the position.

No one has filed for the west ward alderman position, which is currently held by Alan Creek.

Voters will also elect a city tax collector, although the city contracts with the county for the service. The position has no salary. The city sought to establish the post as an appointment as opposed to an elected office, but the ballot issue failed last year.

Scotland County Clerk Betty Lodwegen stated on January 5th that she had received no filings for the county health department, nursing home and hospital board of governors elections.

The filing period for the April election will close at the end of the business day on Tuesday, January 20th.
