Rutledge Man Killed in ‘Industrial Mishap’ in Illinois

A Rutledge man died Friday evening in what is being described by an Illinois county coroner’s office as an “industrial mishap”.

Michael D. Shaw, 54, of Rutledge, was pronounced dead at 7:40 p.m. on January 23rd at the United States Cold Storage facility in Wilmington, IL. According to the Will County Coroner’s Office, Shaw, an over-the-road truck driver, was killed while completing a delivery to the facility. He was attempting to unstrap the load on his semi-trailer, when it collapsed and fell on him.

An autopsy was performed January 24th and the cause of death was listed as multiple crushing injuries.

According to a representative of United States Cold Storage, Shaw, who drives for Thompson, Inc., of Quincy, IL, was delivering a storage rack system built by Konstant Innovative Solutions to the United States Cold Storage facility being constructed in Wilmington, Illinois, when the accident occurred.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mr. Shaw during this difficult time,” said U.S. Cold Storage Midwest Region Area Manager Diane Stewart.

The accident is being investigated by the Wilmington Police Department and the United States Department of Labor Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA).
