No Candidates File For West Ward Alderman

Even with unemployment figures climbing across the nation, there is at least one job in Memphis that people were not lining up to apply for.

The official filing period for the April 7th municipal election closed at the end of the day on Tuesday, January 20th, with no candidates filing for the position of west ward alderman.

Incumbent Allen Creek had indicated to fellow council members that he would not be seeking re-election. No other candidate materialized during the month-long filing period.

Voters in the west ward will now have the opportunity to write in a candidate for the office. According to election official Betty Lodewegen, Scotland County Clerk, because no candidate had filed for the office, write-in votes will be tabulated to determine an election winner.

The write-in candidate that receives the most votes will be declared the election winner. If the election winner does not accept the job, a new west ward alderman would be appointed by the Mayor subject to approval of the city council.

Voters on the east side of town have a pair of candidates to choose from for the east ward alderman job. Lucas Remley, who was appointed to fill the un-expired term vacated when William Reckenberg was elected as Mayor, has filed for the office. He will be opposed on the ballot by Steve Goff.
