Library Receives Technology Grant for New Computers

The days of only going to the library to simply check out a book are long gone. Scotland County Memorial Library like similar institutions across the world have become more than just book houses. While these facilities collections are still key to the reading enjoyment of their patrons, libraries are continuing to add growing numbers of offerings.

Technology has been key to these growing offerings at public libraries.

While just a small, community facility, the Scotland County Memorial Library has continued its efforts to remain on the cutting edge with the latest offerings. However tax dollars and contributions limit those possibilities.

The local facility recently received a revenue boost, courtesy of a grant through the Library Services and Technology Act. The technology mini grant by the Missouri State Library sent $5,287 to the Memphis library.

That funding will cover approximately 75% of the cost of six computers, including a new server, four public workstations, and a staff-cataloging computer.

“The grant strengthens the library’s network reliability by replacing aging equipment,” said librarian Melissa Schuester. “Library patrons may use the public access computers for Internet access as well as Microsoft Office programs.”

The Institute of Museum and Library Services support the project under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
