Chamber of Commerce Kicks Off Busy 2009 Schedule

The Rec Plex gym was full of dancing maniacs on Valentine’s night making the Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce’s 4th annual Valentine’s Dance a huge success. Ticket sales for the event surpassed 230 with dancers and their guests not only getting a chance to boogie with loved ones but also were given the opportunity to take home prizes like Memphis Bucks, $2 bills, Susan B. Anthony dollars, shirts, caps. food coupons and many other wonderful items donated by MACC members.

Members also donated pop, cookies and popcorn for snacks. Many grandparents and parents stayed to watch their little dancers “cut a rug” from 7:00 p.m. through 10:00 p.m., swirling glow sticks and dancing to a wide variety of music. Some of the songs were even requested by the “older” generation.

“We appreciate everyone who attended,” said MACC secretary Tammy Adams. “We really enjoy putting it on and without all of the volunteers, a nice gym to have it, your MACC members and most of all the grandparents and or parents bringing the kids out, it would not have been possible.”

The February event kicked off the 2009 season for the chamber. This year’s officers are Chuck Kigar - President, Brent Walker - Vice-President, Sandy Arnold - Treasurer, and Tammy Adams – Secretary.

Starting in 2009 the MACC will meet at different Chamber Member restaurants for its monthly meetings. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for March 10th at The Gingerbread House; April 14th at Aunt Fayes, and May 12th at Keith’s Cafe. All meetings start at 6:30 p.m. and the public is encouraged to attend.

The Chamber is currently working on a membership drive. Volunteers have tried to go to the businesses personally to start off 2009 with an opportunity to either join the MACC or renew the annual membership. The group will begin to mail flyers in the upcoming week to prospective members. Chamber dues are $60 and go towards various activities the Chamber sponsors to encourage customers to patronize member businesses. Examples of some of the MACC events are the Valentine’s Day Dance, Pancake Day, Peanut Day, and various activities through the holiday shopping season to help promote “shopping locally”.

Important dates coming up for the MACC include:

April 18th - Pancake Day

June 6th - Peanut Day

October 30th - Halloween Safe Stop and Late night movie

August 27-30 - Lemonade stand at the Antique Fair

November - Lighting of the Square

December - Lighting contest, Saturday afternoon movies, and Santa at the VFW.

In addition to the events schedule, the Chamber is actively pursuing the construction of a “Welcome to Memphis” sign at the junction of highways 136 and 15.

Anyone wanting to volunteer to help with any of the upcoming events can call Kountry Konnection at (660) 465-7278 and Chuck or Debbie can notify the committee chairman to contact you.
