Varnold Pleads Guilty to Child Endangerment

A local child endangerment case appears to be coming to a close roughly one year after news of the incident shocked the community.

Amber L. Varnold, 24, of Memphis entered a guilty plea to the class C felony charge of endangering the welfare of a child, stemming from a March 2008 incident involving a child in her care. The plea was entered before Judge William Alberty in the Knox County Circuit Court on February 24th as part of a plea agreement.

Varnold originally faced three counts of endangering the welfare of a child following an investigation by the Memphis Police Department after a baby was treated for a head injury at Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis back in March of 2008. The baby’s condition was reported to law enforcement officials and the ensuing investigation was handled by the the Memphis Police Department and the State Technical Assistance Team (STAT), resulting in Varnold’s arrest.

The felony complaint versus Varnold was filed by special prosecuting attorney Scott Summers.

She originally entered a plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, but changed that plea to not guilty in December 2008, after having her own recognizance bond revoked by the court.

A sentencing hearing has been set for April 28th.
