Only 24% of Voters Turn Out For Election

With a limited ballot, voter turnout was extremely light for the April 7th Municipal Election. Only 731 ballot cards were cast from among 2,969 registered voters for a 24.62% turnout.

Voters reaffirmed the cent sales tax for the capital improvement fund of the Scotland County Road and Bridge department by a final margin of 599 yes to 123 no.

Patrons of the Scotland County R-I School District elected Randall W. Tobler and re-elected Gary Miller. Tobler received 429 votes and Miller earned 461 votes. A total of 351 ballots were marked for incumbent Stacy Westhoff while Christopher Yarbrough received 68 votes.

In the city of Memphis, Lucas Remley was elected as east ward alderman. He defeated challenger Scott Goff by a final tally of 102 to 53. Remley was appointed to the council last year to fill an un-expired term created by a resignation.

On the west side of town, incumbent Allen Creek was re-elected despite not filing for the job. With no name on the ballot, west ward voters wrote in Creek 19 times. The next highest totals were for Royce Cook with 12 votes and Darrell Harvey with six votes.

The city continues to elect a city collector, despite the fact the office has no salary and is a position in title only. The city contracts the tax collection service with the county, but past efforts to have the issue taken off the ballots have failed by a vote of the public. Michele Drummond received 12 write-in votes for the job.

Next week's edition will feature complete election results.
