Help Stamp Out Hunger

Memphis, MO – As many families struggle to pay the bills and keep food on the table, the National Letter Carriers Association asks you to help in the fight against hunger. Simply leave a box, sack, or can of non-perishable food near your mailbox Saturday, May 9 for your letter carrier to pick up. The food will be delivered to local food banks and pantries that serve the area where the food is collected.

“Millions of families are struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table,” Postmaster Monica March said, “Food pantries are struggling to keep their shelves stocked as the newly unemployed and working families trying to stretch their paycheck in the current economy.”

March also noted that donations are particularly critical in the summer when most school lunch programs are suspended and millions of children must find alternate source of nutrition.

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive is the largest one-day drive in the nation.

Making a donation is easy. Customers should leave their non-perishable food donation in a bag near their mailbox on May 9, before their letter carrier arrives.

The U.S. Postal Service’s Priority Mail Service, Campbell Soup Company, and America’s Second Harvest are major supporters of the food drive. Campbell Soup and the Postal Service will cosponsor the printing of 105 million postcards to postal customers announcing the food drive.

Other co-sponsors of the drive with the letter carriers’ union are Feeding America, formerly known as American’s Second Harvest, the nation’s food bank network; the United Way of America and its local United Ways; and the AFL-CIO.
