Iowa Driver Apprehended After Fleeing Safety Stop

An Iowa teenager led law enforcement officers on a five-mile chase before ultimately being apprehended near the Briggs-Smith Memorial Airport west of Memphis.

According to the Scotland County Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred at 2:50 p.m. on May 27th.

Officers from the sheriff’s department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol were performing a safety stop checkpoint one mile east of Downing on Highway 136. The program, which began at 2:00 p.m., was designed to review motorists seat belt use.

During this process, a red 1993 Nissan was stopped by a sheriff’s deputy. It was determined that the driver, Barry L. Surber, 18, of Bloomfield, IA, was operating the vehicle without a valid driver’s license.

When the deputy requested that Surber park the vehicle next to the patrol vehicles, the driver instead turned the vehicle around and fled the scene traveling eastbound on Highway 136. A pursuit ensued, with officers chasing the vehicle for approximately five miles before Surber stopped near the airport.

Surber was arrested for resisting arrest, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, operating a vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner, failure to display valid plates and operating a motor vehicle without a valid license.

He was transported to the Scotland County Jail where he was held pending his court appearance.
