Scotland County Football Program’s ‘Got Milk’

Got milk? or Got milk money? The former is the famous motto of the dairy industry and the latter may soon be the slogan for the 2009 SCR-I football program. Now courtesy of regional producers, the Tigers got milk.

The Midwest Dairy Association has bestowed a $3,000 grant to the Scotland County football program for the promotion of “Recover With Chocolate Milk”. The purpose of the grant is designed to promote better nutrition in high school athletes by providing them with 16 oz. of chocolate milk within one-half hour after practice, workouts and competitions. Scotland County was one of a select few programs to be chosen from Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Eastern Oklahoma, and South Dakota, to receive this honor.

Experts agree that chocolate milk has its benefits. Mitzi Dulan, sports nutrition expert for the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs states, “Chocolate milk has been shown to be just as effective as commercial sports drinks in helping athletes recover and rehydrate and it has the bonus of additional nutrients not found in most traditional sports drinks. Plus my athletes love the taste.

“High school athletes need to have a recovery beverage within half an hour after strenuous practice and competition,” states Stephanie Cundith, MS, RD, LD, Nutrition Communications Program Manager, Midwest Dairy Council.

The grant states that the team may use up to 20% of the “milk money” for the purchase of chocolate milk. The remaining funds will be used for additional strength and conditioning equipment in the SCR-I weight room, player promotional t-shirts, and the promotion of chocolate milk as a sports recovery drink. With remaining funds, the team plans to invite a sports nutritionist to speak
