Youth Hunters to Kickoff Firearms Deer Season This Weekend

While a hunter's outfit may be an easy costume for trick-or-treaters this weekend, youngsters may want to make sure they have enough time to eliminate the odor of candy so the deer don't get spooked, literally.

The camouflage and blaze orange won't just be for Halloween. Hunters between the age of six and 15 will have the opportunity to take to the woods this weekend for the special two-day youth firearms season October 31st and November 1st.

Youth can hunt during the two-days using any of the following valid permits: Youth Deer & Turkey Hunting Permit; Resident Landowner Firearms Any-Deer Hunting Permit (if hunting on qualifying land); Resident or Resident Landowner Firearms Antlerless Deer Hunting Permit (if hunting on qualifying land) Landowner Firearms Any-Deer Hunting Permit (if hunting on qualifying land); Resident or Nonresident Firearms Any-Deer Hunting Permit; Resident or Nonresident Firearms Antlerless Deer Hunting Permit

If the youth is not hunter-education certified, he or she must hunt in the immediate presence of a qualifying mentor.

Only one deer can be taken during the early youth season. Hunters with more than one permit, can only fill additional tags during a later season, either the regular firearms season November 14-24, the anterless season November 26 - December 6 or the second special youth season January 2nd and 3rd, 2010.

Only one antlered deer may be taken by a youth hunter during the various seasons.

Antler-point restrictions do not apply during the youth portion.

Successful hunters are encouraged to share photos of their deer with the Memphis Democrat. E-mail digital photos to
