Steven Dale Nelson, 56, of rural Farmington, IA died Sunday, August 2, 2009 at his home in Clark County, MO southwest of Farmington.

He was born July 17, 1953 in Keosauqua, IA to Peter NC and Irene Findley Nelson.

He was married to Dianna Smith of Downing, MO in 1975 and later divorced.

Steven graduated from Fox Valley High School, Milton, IA in 1971, earned an Associated Degree in 1973 from Indian Hills Community College, Ottumwa, IA and served 19 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as a Sergeant First Class.

He was of the Christian faith, loved his family and his country and enjoyed the outdoors, horses and mechanics.

Survivors include two daughters, Ella Mae McCallum (David) and Amanda Nelson of Moline, IL; two grandchildren, Ryan and Duncan McCallum; his father, Peter NC Nelson of Farmington, IA; his mother, Irene Nelson of Cantril, IA; four sisters, Victoria Hughes (Danny) of Cantril, IA, Malinda Nelson of Pulaski, IA, Laura Nelson (James Lunsford) and Karla Nelson (Todd Sheetz) of Keosauqua, IA; a brother, Peter Nelson, Jr. (Burnie Wallace) of New London, IA; and two nephews, Travis Hughes of Cantril, IA and Joshua Smith of Downing, MO.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Pamela Nelson.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 5, 2009 in Cantril Christian Church, Cantril, IA, Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating. Burial with military rites in charge of Russell-Strait Post No. 483 will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Milton, IA. Gifts to a memorial to be designated later by the family may be left at the funeral home or church or mailed to the family at 2216 7th Avenue, Moline, IL 61265.
