CALVIN KRAUS

Calvin Kraus, 84, of Arbela, Missouri passed away Monday, August 24, 2009, at the Boone County Medical Center in Columbia, Missouri.

The youngest son of Karl G. and Mary E. Essig Kraus, he was born on November 4, 1924 on the family farm near Arbela, Missouri.

He attended grade school at Hazel Hill and later graduated from the Granger High School in 1941.

He married his high school sweetheart, Cleatus Hopp on December 28, 1943 by the Rev. Benj Hollis south of Arbela, Missouri. To this union two children were born, Sandra and Dennis.

Calvin worked at many jobs in his 84 years. He worked for various farmers starting at a young age. He was employed at the Ford Garage in Kahoka, Missouri. He owned his own trucking business and drove the Scotland County school bus for 26 years, from 1962-1988. Calvin was employed by the Mercantile Bank from March 1, 1976 to 1991. For over thirty years until his death he was employed by the Community Bank.

In his spare time he enjoyed helping his son on the farm and his daughter Sandra mow their yards. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandson, Steven and three nephews, Kevin, Michael and Greg Kraus who always called him grandpa.

Surviving relatives include his daughter, Sandy Kraus of Arbela, Missouri and special friend Conie Baker; his son, Dennis (Mary Lou) Kraus of Memphis, Missouri; grandson, Steven (Jonell) Kraus of Kirksville, Missouri; step-grandsons, Todd (Anita) Cline, Chris (Sarah) Cline and Jeff (Kate) Cline; seven step-great grandchildren, Darick, Rebecca, Hannah, Nova, Noah, Madelyn and Penelope; one sister-in-law Claris Kraus of Memphis, Missouri plus many nieces, nephews, cousins. He will be missed by all his friends that knew him.

Preceding him in death was his wife of 54 years; his parents; one sister, Leona Trueblood; and three brothers, Richard, Hubert and Karl Jr. Kraus.

Memorials are suggested to the Arbela Methodist Church and can be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison St., Memphis, Missouri 63555.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis with Rev. Dr. George H. Mullins officiating. Interment followed in the Memphis Cemetery.

Musicians were Ann Luther, organist and Angela Westhoff, soloist.

Pallbearers were Charlie Boyer, Donnie Harvey, Gene and Bobby Bair, Kory Norton and Joe Doubet.

Honorary Pallbearers were Tom Priebe, Jim Woods, Joe Fulk, Dave Shalley, Vernon Heath, Junior Childress and Marshall Roberts.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis.
