CHARLES BARB GREEN
(9/25/1916-9/7/2009)



Charles B. Green of Memphis, MO was born September 25, 1916 on the farm south of Downing in Scotland County, MO, the son of Ellet Ishmael and Maude Appaline (Barb) Green.

He passed away on Monday, September 7, 2009, at Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO, at the age of 92.

Charles attended Walnut Grove Rural School and graduated from Downing High School in Downing, MO, in 1934. He also attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville, MO, for two years.

Before entering the Army on June 8, 1942, Charles did construction work. He served in active combat as a member of the 79th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop “Mechanized” which landed on Utah Beach, France, immediately after D-Day. During his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and four Bronze Stars for campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. His troop was awarded the French Croix De Guerre Medal. He was also offered a battlefield commission which he refused preferring to remain an enlisted member of the troop. Charles was discharged October 7, 1945, with the rank of 1st Sergeant.

After the war, Charles returned to Scotland County and the farm where he was born. He was always interested in the stewardship of the land. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and NFO. Charles was a member of the First Baptist Church of Downing, MO.

On June 14, 1970 he was married to Venita Jean (Lancaster) Childress.

Surviving include one brother, Lee Green of Shreveport, LA; three nieces, Lois Bradford of Dalton, GA, Barbara Boyd and husband, Michael of Red Oak, TX, and Judy Sharp of Baring, MO; one nephew, Michael Green of Edina, MO; several cousins; other family members and many good friends.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Venita Jean Green on August 21, 2004, and one sister, Helen Brumberg on October 22, 1988.

A graveside service was held Saturday, September 12, 2009, at the Downing City Cemetery in Downing, MO, with David Barton, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. Memorials have been established for the First Baptist Church of Downing, MO, or to the Scotland County Care Center of Memphis, MO. Burial of the cremains was in the Downing City Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster and Downing, MO.
