Slow First Half Helps Highland Upend Tigers in Tourney Action

With leading scorer Jacob Howard on the bench in street clothes, Scotland County knew points were going to be hard to come by on January 6th in the second round of the 37th annual Highland Tournament. But even without their senior center, SCR-I had to expect to put up more than eight points in the first half.

The host Cougars took advantage of Scotland County’s scoring problems to jump out to a 14-3 lead after the first period.

Brandon Garnett was responsible for all three first quarter points for the Tigers.

SCR-I managed just one more field goal in the second period, as Highland expanded its lead to 26-8 at the intermission.

The Tigers played much better in the second half but it was too little, too late. Kyle Shelley, Kasey Dial and Harley Stone each made field goals in the third period but it wasn’t enough to keep Highland from adding to the 40-17 deficit.

Scotland County outscored Highland 11-10 in the final period but the Cougars still cruised to the 50-28 victory sending the Tigers to the consolation game on Friday evening.

Stone finished with 11 points to lead the Tigers (2-8). Garnett added eight points. Highland (4-7) was led in scoring by Kyle Ellison with 19 points.
