Tigers Top Mustangs 58-40 to Advance in North Shelby Tourney
Scotland County’s full-court pressure defense was too much for Marion County to handle on January 21st in the second round of the North Shelby Tournament as the Tigers raced to a 58-40 win over the Mustangs.
SCR-I jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the games opening minutes as Kyle Shelley was the beneficiary of plenty of early scoring opportunities created by Marion County turnovers. The junior forward scored 10 first period points.
After Brandon Garnett knocked down a three pointer, Shelley scored back-to-back field goals to make it 19-9 to end the first period.
The lead remained in double digits most of the second period. A three-point play by Garnett closed the second period with the Tigers on top 32-19.
Scotland County doubled up on the Mustangs early in the third period. Baskets by Andrew Duley and Jacob Howard extended the margin to 38-19.
But Austin Redd made three three pointers in the third period for the Mustangs and Marion County pulled within 42-34 to end the quarter.
Redd knocked down another three pointer to open the fourth period and trim the deficit to 42-37.
But that was as close as the Tigers would let them get. Shelley hit a pair of free throws and followed that up with a three point play to push the lead back to 47-37.
Scotland County closed the contest on a 16-3 run to advance to the consolation finals of the North Shelby Tournament.
Scotland County (3-13) was led in scoring by Shelley with 25 points. Howard finished with 12 points and Garnett added nine points in the win.
