Lady Mustangs Run Away From SCR-I In Tourney Championship
Odd or even is a game of chance, but on Saturday night it was the story of opposite quarters for Scotland County in the championship game of the North Shelby Tournament.
The Lady Tigers used baskets by Betsey Kittle, Melissa Cotton, Valerie Oldham and Kaitlin Caldwell in the first period to keep close to the #5 ranked team in Missouri Class 1. The Lady Tigers trailed 9-8 after the first period as freshman Jessica Redd matched the SCR-I output with eight first period points.
The offense went south in the second period. Scotland County scored just three points over the next eight minutes.
Marion County used an 18-3 run to build a 27-11 lead at the intermission. Jordan Johnson scored eight points and Morgan Spratt drilled a pair of three pointers to fuel the spurt.
Scotland County’s offense was revived in the third period. Cotton hit a pair of three pointers as SCR-I put up 14 points on the scoreboard. But Marion County matched the output and kept the lead at 41-25.
The Lady Mustangs put the game away in the fourth period. SCR-I managed just two freethrows over the final eight minutes and Marion County took home the championship trophy with the 53-27 victory.
Cotton led Scotland County (10-6) with 12 points on the night. Redd finished with 18 to pace Marion County (11-2).
