Gutting, Smith Big Winners in Extreme Taxidermy Turkey Hunting Contest
Mother Nature dampened the turnout for the 3rd Annual Brooke Shoop Memorial Youth Turkey Hunting Contest sponsored by Extreme Taxidermy in Memphis. A total of 13 participants checked in birds during the two day youth season.
Jacoby Gutting of Wyaconda took the top prize with the largest bird overall. His tom weighed 26 pounds, had an 11½ inch beard and one inch spurs for a total score of 38.5. Keenan Bradley had the heaviest bird of the youth season at 27 pounds, but a 10 inch beard and one inch spurs gave him an overall score of 38 points for a second place finish. Daniel Beeler of Lancaster and Allie Weaver of St. Louis tied for third place with scores of 37 3/8 and Austin Smith was fourth with a score of 36 9/16.
Smith was the lucky winner in the drawing for a Mossburg youth model 20-gauge. Trent Halterman won the turkey decoy and Zac Curry took home a turkey hunting blind. Beeler won a slate call and Skyler Holton picked up a new owl hooter call. Allie Weaver’s name was drawn for the Brooke Shoop Memorial turkey call made specially by local craftsman Aaron Dannenhauer.
“We were very pleased at the turnout despite the weather,” said organizers Gary and Sharon Shoop. “We hope next year will be bigger and better. Seeing the look on the youngsters’ faces as they bring in their birds brings joy to our hearts.”
