Scotland County Hunters Bag 214 Turkeys During First Week

After a slow start to the 2009 spring turkey season, hunters rebounded over the next six days to lower the gap between the numbers of birds checked in last season.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, a total of 22,308 turkeys were checked in April 20th-26th. That is 591 fewer turkeys than taken during the first week in 2008. However the number shows an improvement since opening day, when hunters were nearly 1,000 birds behind last year’s total.

Scotland County hunters bagged 214 birds during the first seven days this year, nine turkey’s behind last year’s pace. Of that total, 186 were adult birds with just 28 juveniles harvested.

Macon County led the northeast region with a harvest total of 285 followed by Pike County with 234 and Knox County with 218. Other county totals included Clark (180), Schuyler (131) and Adair (217).

Franklin County led the state with 453 turkeys harvested in the first week. Texas County bagged 440 birds followed by Callaway County with 358.

Overall, Missouri hunters harvested 17,316 (79.7%) adult birds and 4,401 juveniles.

The Missouri state record for the opening week was 29,018 turkeys harvested in 2004.
