Lady Tigers Claim Season- Opening Win in Final At Bat
Scotland County never led until it counted the most. The Lady Tigers knocked off Highland 7-6 in the teams’ softball season opener on Monday, August 24th in Memphis.
The Cougars jumped on top 3-0 in the top of the first inning against freshman starter Megan Creek. The defense was a major culprit, as a pair of errors allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate in Creek’s varsity debut.
But the Lady Tigers came right back in the bottom of the opening frame to knot the score at 3-3. Elizabeth Duzan led off with a single. Creek followed with a single and Kelly Lister made it three base hits in a row as she singled home Duzan. Creek scored on a wild pitch before Skyler Alderton delivered a sacrifice fly to deep center field to score Lister.
A lead off walk in the top of the second helped Highalnd take the lead 4-3 in the top of the second.
SCR-I tied the game in the bottom of the third. Loren Smith walked and moved into scoring position when Cali Holt reached on an error. Courtney Jackson delivered an RBI single to make the score 4-4.
An error opened the door for Highland to score a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning to regain the advantage at 6-4.
Those were the final runs Creek would allow as she blanked Highland over the final three innings.
SCR-I left the bases loaded in the fifth inning but finally broke through in the sixth. Creek singled and stole second base. Smith reached on an error that allowed Creek to score and Alderton tied the game with an RBI triple.
The Cougars threatened in the seventh inning after a lead off single. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner all the way to third base, but SCR-I’s defense erased the scoring opportunity. The runner was picked off third base when Lister tagged her out in a rundown from her catcher position.
The Lady Tigers walked off winners in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kiley Frazier reached on an error. Augusta Purvis walked to put two runners on with no outs. Duzan laid down a perfect bunt to advance the runners. The sacrifice attempt was fielded by the first baseman, but Duzan avoided the tag and forced a throw that got away from the defender and allowed Frazier come all the way around to score the winning run from second base.
Creek picked up the victory in her first career start. She went seven innings, allowing six runs, only two earned runs. She surrendered 10 hits and walked one while striking out five.
Creek was 2-3 at the plate with a couple of runs scored. Duzan was 2-4 and Alderton went 2-3 with a pair of RBI. SCR-I (1-0) traveled to Brashear on August 25th and will host Clark County on Thursday, August 27th.
