Kirksville Denies SCR-I Softball Tourney Title

The future of the Kirksville softball program looks pretty strong. In an effort to fill out the eight team bracket at the Knox County varsity softball tournament, the Kirksville junior varsity squad was invited to compete.

And compete they did. The youngsters ended Scotland County’s run at the tourney title, blasting SCR-I 14-3 in the championship contest on September 5th in Edina.

SCR-I had bested South Shelby and North Shelby to advance to the finals while Kirksville had knocked off Canton and host Knox County.

SCR-I jumped on top 1-0 in the top of the first. Megan Creek led off with a walk. She stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Kelly Lister.

Kirksville rallied in the bottom of the frame, scoring three times. They added to the advantage in the bottom of the second, tacking on a pair of unearned runs courtesy of two fielding miscues by SCR-I.

SCR-I trimmed the deficit to 5-2 in the top of third. Elizabeth Duzan opened the rally with a base hit. Lister followed with a double before Loren Smith knocked in the run with a base hit.

Kirksville tacked on two runs in the bottom of the inning and then blew the game open, batting around in the fourth to pull ahead 14-2.

SCR-I scored once in the top of the fifth but it wasn’t enough to prevent the game from ending under the 10-run rule.

Creek took the loss on the mound, allowing four hits while striking out two in two innings of work. Lister worked the final two innings in relief.

Lister was 2-3 with a 2B and an RBI at the plate. Smith and Duzan both went 1-3 with an RBI while Creek was 0-1 with two walks and two runs scored.

SCR-I brought home second place from the tourney and now stands with a 5-2 record.
