Extension to Host Farm and Small Business Estate Planning Class

Do you want to be in charge of who gets your assets after you’re gone? Are you concerned about what your estate will cost your heirs? What are the best tools available to plan my estate how I want? These are just a few of the questions that will be answered at the Farm & Small Business Estate Planning Workshop series that is being held on February 9th, 16th and 23rd. The sessions will begin at 6:00 p.m. and run until 9:00 p.m. at the Brookfield Career Center in Brookfield (122 Pershing Road); North Shelby High School ITV Room (3071 Hwy 15) or the Scotland County High School ITV Room in Memphis (Route 3 Box 19A). Pre-registration is required by February 5th.

“Due to the fact that farmers and businesses have some very unique estate issues, these sessions are geared to their specific needs” says Joe Koenen, Agricultural Business Specialist with University of Missouri Extension who is one of the people who developed and will help teach this program. Darla Campbell and Karisha Devlin, Agricultural Business Specialists will also teach part of the program. Judge Karl DeMarce, the Associate Circuit Judge from Scotland County will teach part of the program on Probate in Missouri. “The major increase in asset values, especially land, in the last several years has made this topic even more critical” said Joe. Session 1 will discuss Why Plan Your Estate; Who Should Be Involved; What Materials You’ll Need; Property Ownership and Business Organization and Choosing Advisors, including attorneys. Session 2 is on Estate Planning Tools. Session 3 will finish up with Probate Here in Missouri; Estate and Gift Taxes (and what’s going on at the Federal level with that) and discuss Communication Issues with Family and others. You need to attend all 3 sessions of this class.
