MDC Grant to Fund New Gear for Firemen

Mention gear in the same sentence as the Missouri Department of Conservation, and one might expect it to be camoflauged or blaze orange. The later will be closer to the truth, as the new gear for the Scotland County Fire Department will be yellow with built-in reflective measures for personal security.

The MDC is helping foot the bill for three new sets of personal protection equipment (PPE) for the local volunteer department. Conservation department officials recently announced a grant of up to $3,000 for the local department to be used to pay for the three sets of protective gear as well as 24 sets of structural gloves and 24 new structural hoods. The later are fire-retardant, heat-resistance head gear worn under the firemenís helmets.

A grant application was recently submitted to the MDC for assistance in covering the estimated cost of $6,600 for the purchase. The application was made by fire chief Bryan Whitney. The department recently learned the Department of Conservation has selected the application for approval under the Voluntary Fire Assistance (VFA) matching funds program. Under the program, the local department will be reimbursed up to 50% of the total cost, not to exceed $3,000.

All purchases must be made and submitted for reimbursement prior to May 7, 2010. Grant payments will be delivered by local Forestry Division staff sometime in July or August.

The grant was announced by Bill Altman, Forestry Field Program Supervisor.

The local department provides fire protection for MDCís Indian Hills Conservation Area which covers more than 3,900 acres in southern Scotland County near Bible Grove.
