Troop B Traffic Crash Numbers Down 50% in January

Lots of folks want to start the New Year off with a bang. But fortunately for area motorists, the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) reports there were far fewer bangs in the first month of 2010.

The Troop B Headquarters of the MSHP reported accident totals declined by almost 50% from last year for the month of January. The 16-county region had just 54 traffic accidents investigated by the Patrol during the month compared to 107 during that same time span in 2009.

Both Scotland and Schuyler counties had zero accidents covered by troopers in the year’s first 31 days. None of the 16 counties reached double figures. Randolph County saw the steepest decline. Troopers investigated just 5 traffic accidents in the county home to Moberly and a busy Highway 63, compared to a Troop B high 17 accidents in January of 2009.

Ralls County was the only Troop B member to witness an increase in traffic accidents in the year’s first month. Troopers investigated nine traffic accidents in the county compared to just three the previous year.

Knox County dropped from five traffic crashes to just one thus far in 2010 and Clark County saw its totals decline from seven to one traffic accident covered by the Patrol in 2010.

There were no fatalities in the Troop B region in January, a much better start than in 2009 when Knox County recorded two traffic-accident deaths.

Despite the decline in the number of accidents, the Patrol reported the exact same number of accident-related injuries, 13, in both January 2009 and January 2010.
