Library Offering Free Books for Big Read Project

Books for the Big Read are still available at the Scotland County Memorial Library. The Things They Carried, a look into the lives of soldiers during the Vietnam War, by Tim O’Brien are provided free of charge to anyone interested in reading it and participating in a discussion group. To get a copy of the book and sign up for a discussion group, call Sheila Berkowitz at 660 465-2496 after 6:00 p.m. or pick up a copy of the book and sign up for the discussion group at the Scotland County Memorial Library. The discussion in Memphis will be held at the Scotland County Memorial Library on Thursday, March 25, at 5:45.

In conjunction with the Big Read, classic Vietnam era movies will be shown during the month of March at the Downtown Cinema 8 in Kirksville beginning at 6:45 at no charge. (The theater holds 200 and will seat on a first-come-first-served basis.) “Full Metal Jacket” will be shown on Wednesday, March 17, and “Platoon” will be shown on Wednesday, March 24.

Scotland County/Memphis is included in the Big Read project as part of Truman State University’s grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Big Read festivities will conclude with a Capstone Event on April 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the Dukum Inn in Kirksville. The event will include a moderated panel discussion followed by a reception with light refreshments and music.
