Gorin Man Dies in Phelps County Jail
Just weeks after being sentenced to five years in federal prison on drug charges, a Gorin man died in his jail cell in Phelps County on March 18th.
Shane E. Krise, 25, of Gorin was pronounced dead at 3:20 p.m. at the emergency room of the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla.
According to the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department, which administers the county jail, Krise was found unresponsive in his bunk at 2:20 p.m. First responders from the Rolla City Fire Department administered CPR to Krise and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) was deployed. Medics from the Phelps County Ambulance Service then arrived and took over treatment of the patient, who was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
According to the sheriff’s department, initial observations indicate Krise’s death was of natural causes. Phelps County Sheriff Richard Lisenbe requested the Missouri Highway Patrol conduct an independent investigation.
Krise was in the custody of the United Stated Marshals service, after being remanded by the federal court following his March 9th sentencing to five years in prison on one felony count of conspiracy to manufacture in excess of 50 grams of methamphetamine.
Representatives of the Marshal’s service indicated that inmates are often held at county jails in the region since there is no federal jail in eastern Missouri. Krise was being held in the Phelps County Jail under his contract agreement with the U.S. Marshals service awaiting transport to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
Krise had been in the custody of the Phelps County Jail since March 9th according to Sergeant Detective Andrew Davis of the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department.
Davis stated an autopsy was being performed by the Springfield medical examiner’s office.
