Fatal Crash in Illinois Claims Lives of Two Local Residents

An early-morning one-vehicle crash in Illinois claimed the lives of two Scotland County residents and left two others with serious injuries.

According to the Illinois State Police, Lyle G. Stauffer, 18, of Rutledge and Beverly R. Welch, 20, of Memphis, were killed when the vehicle they were riding in went off the road and overturned several times.

The crash occurred at 6:15 a.m. on Thursday, April 1 on Highway 136, approximately 5.5 miles east of Carthage, IL, in Hancock County.

Investigators indicated that Jay R. Fox, 21, of Memphis was driving a 2002 Dodge Durango westbound on Highway 136, approximately mile east of the East County Road 2500 intersection, when the vehicle drifted onto the south shoulder then back onto the roadway. The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, which traveled across the median, striking the northbound shoulder of the eastbound roadway. The vehicle rolled several times, ejecting the driver, front passenger and left rear passenger.

Fox, suffered serious injuries in the crash. Two other passengers in the vehicle, Bradley Weaver, 18, of Arbela; and Jennifer N. Clayton, 25, of Memphis, suffered moderate injuries in the crash.

Fox and Weaver were flown from the scene by Air-Evac helicopter to Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. Clayton was transported by Carthage EMS to Carthage Memorial Hospital.

The group was reportedly returning from a trip to Pennsylvania to deliver an ATV that had been purchased locally.
