Local Couple Killed In Crash in Kirksville

A two-vehicle accident on the south edge of Kirksville has claimed the lives of a Memphis couple. According to the Kirksville Police Department, the crash occurred at the intersection of Highway 63 and Highway 11 at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, April 12th.

Lurla Meinhardt, 84, was driving a 1998 Pontiac eastbound on Highway 11 attempting to make a left-hand turn onto northbound Highway 63 when she pulled into the path of a southbound tractor trailer driven by Richard Ferguson, 52, of Kirksville.

Lurla Meinhardt was transported by Adair County Ambulance to Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville where she was pronounced dead. A passenger in her vehicle, her husband, George Meinhardt, 88, was transported by Air-Evac helicopter to a Columbia hospital where he passed away Monday evening.

Ferguson was not injured in the crash.

The accident was investigated by the Kirksville Police Department.

Funeral services for the Meinhardts are pending with the Memphis Funeral Home.
