Memphis Woman Dies in Head-On Collision

An early morning crash April 8th on the west edge of Memphis claimed the life of a Scotland County woman.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Karen E. Leon, 52, of Memphis, was eastbound on Highway 136 in a 1999 Lexus when the vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a westbound 1989 International tractor-trailer head on. Leon’s vehicle traveled off the south side of the roadway and came to rest in a field.

The semi, driven by William L. Merideth, 60, of Keokuk, IA, traveled off the north side of the roadway before coming to rest in the ditch near the Monroe Street, Highway 136 intersection.

The accident occurred west of the entrance to the MFA station at approximately 5:00 a.m.

Leon was pronounced dead at the scene by Scotland County coroner Ginny Monroe.

Merideth sustained minor injuries in the accident. He was taken by Scotland County Ambulance to Scotland County Hospital in Memphis.

The section of the highway was closed until early afternoon as the Missouri State Highway Patrol Major Crash Team #2 completed the investigation.

The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Memphis Police Department, Scotland County Sheriff’s Department, Scotland County Fire and Rescue, Scotland County Ambulance, Scotland County Coroner and MoDOT.
